Position Summary:
Rakuten Institute of Technology is the dedicated R&D organization within Rakuten Inc. The Rakuten Institute of Technology is involved in research projects with a large number of businesses within the group.
The Project Management Office (PMO) is a newly created group responsible for helping the Rakuten Institute of Technology achieve better results through projects.
Within this group, The R&D project Manager will be in charge of leading and supporting research project through the Stage Gate process from opportunity discovery and validation to project delivery and result evaluation.
This challenging position will require the candidate to be able to successfully build bridges between 3 different worlds: Research, Engineering and Business.

Typical duties/responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1 - Discover new Opportunities:

  • Establish strong relationship with various Businesses inside Rakuten Group and external business partners.
  • By actively listening to business teams, identify main pain points and discover new research opportunities
  • Understand the key technical characteristics and general business implications of the Rakuten Institute of Technology's solutions.
  • Present Rakuten Institute of Technology technologies and connect existing solution to business pain points 
2 - Opportunities and Ideas qualification:
  • In case of Business request, qualifying the opportunity: feasibility study with the research team, ROI analysis with the Business team, Risks analysis.
  • In case of Research Idea, help challenging Idea in early stage, help building a realistic and sustainable proposal, help finding a business partner
  • Leading the process of decision and prioritization inside the Rakuten Institute of Technology
  • Aligning project vision between the Rakuten Institute of Technology & Business
3 - Project Launch:
  • Facilitate or lead the definition of the project including goal, scope, definition of resources, planning and success criteria
  • Turn unclear, complex, and ambiguous needs into realistic, clear and stable direction for the research team
4 - Lead or support the project Team to deliver and/or deploy the results of the research project
  • Facilitate the Communication between the R&D Team and the Business Team
  • Pro-actively manage risks and changes ensuring that appropriate actions are planned and executed to resolve resource conflicts, remove roadblocks or implement risk mitigation plans.
  • Report project status on a regular basis, create and manage the necessary document for communication (presentation, project proposal, reports..)
  • Positively energize and keep the Research team focused on the goal. Mentor junior members.
5 - Evaluating the results and follow up
  • Transferring technology now-how to operations groups
  • Evaluate Project results according to Rakuten Institute of Technology's KPIs and take follow up actions.
  • Create and share lessons learned with the PMO team.

Minimum Qualifications:

Key skills:
  • Facilitator skills
  • Excellent Problem solving skills
  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts and results to non-technical audiences
  • Management of technology, understanding of latest technology, strong interest in research latest trends
  • Business acumen, capacity to look at the problem from a Business view point
  • +5 years in Technology Market including + 3 years successful previous Project / Product Management experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with PM methodology preferred (PMI, PRINCE2, Agile, waterfall..)
  • Project Management Professional Certified (PMP) is a is a significant plus
  • MBA is a significant plus
  • MOT ( Management of Technology) is a plus
  • Startup experience is a plus
  • Research & Development experience is a plus
  • Mentoring abilities
  • Master's degree (or more) in Science or Engineering
