Content Display Quality Intern

Start Date: September 1, 2019 (6 months contract)

The Company:

Here at Rakuten Kobo Inc. we offer a casual working start-up environment and a group of friendly and talented individuals. Our employees rank us highly in terms of commitment to work / life balance. We realize that for our people to be innovative, creative and passionate they need to have healthy minds and bodies. With that in mind, we offer one of the best group benefits plans as well as gym discounts and a personal fitness budget. We hold an annual Wellness Day, host Lunch and Learns to promote a healthy lifestyle and provide fresh fruit daily and other healthy snacks. Teams love our Pooch program and say "dogs in the office make everything better".

Booklovers are thrilled to see that we offer employees a free device upon joining.  We encourage reading time as well as host frequent Lunch and Learn Author Series.

We believe in rewarding all our employees with competitive salaries, performance based annual bonuses, stock options and training opportunities.  For our growing Kobo families, we offer a maternity/paternity leave top up, as well as time off for the non-child bearing parent.

The Role:
The Kobo Intern will work closely with our passionate, book-obsessed and data driven Content QA Team to review incoming content and customer feedback. Your analysis and insight will also be relied upon in communications with publishers and our internal development teams with the goal of revising content and expanding content support.

Why Do You Want to Be The Kobo Intern?

Tech companies are a lot of fun

We don’t sweat the small stuff and your contributions will be valued. If you think you have a better idea or approach to a current project or process we’re all ears. As part of a four person team there will be plenty of opportunities to make your mark.

Skills Development

You’ll be managing queues and working on multiple projects but you’ll also be able to dive into software QA, ebook and audiobook specification standards, user feedback and data analytics.

Interesting Work (and Paid Interesting Work)

If you’re a recent grad or trying to move into a different field this is a great role to gain experience while getting paid. (How much, you ask? $2,700 a month for six months).

Here's what we are looking for:

Candidates must have the following qualifications:

  • The ability to read, edit and lookup items pertaining to HTML and CSS.

  • You’re not a professional programmer/designer, but code is not a foreign concept to you and you’re willing to learn.

  • College/university diploma or work/project experience in the realm of digital media/content;

  • A strong interest in digital media and technology - you’ve spent time on something inside or outside of an educational institution that demonstrates a passion for how digital content is produced, distributed or consumed;

  • Is task oriented and focused but can also think big picture and identify trends;

  • Can compose a professional email and handle ongoing communications with external parties regarding technical issues;

It would be an added bonus if you also have:

  • Solid hands-on experience with Microsoft Excel (i.e. you can run a VLOOKUP, concatenate data and create a pivot table);

  • An affinity for producing documentation and helping us identify areas where our existing documentation is lacking.

  • Specific knowledge of audio/audiobook production

  • Specific knowledge of epub (i.e. you know how to open one, poke around and side-load it to a phone, tablet or eInk device)

In lieu of a cover letter we’d prefer you paste these questions into your application and include a brief response for each:

  • What’s something that’s broken or in need of improvement on one of our apps/devices (we’re thick skinned so don’t hold back)?

  • What’s your favourite media app (something you read/watch/listen to content on) and why?

  • Why do you think we haven’t fixed or built the thing you’re suggesting?
